Escaping from the ‘Cage’
Finding freedom from within a cage of fear
Sometimes we can feel as if we’re living in a cage. Thick strong bars of fear hold us captive and even make us breathe, eat and behave unhealthily.
However, between the bars of the cage there is air, light and breeze. Focussing on the space between the bars allows us to sense the air and the light. Then we realise that, even though the bars of the cage exist, there is actually much more space than there is iron. Finding freedom, in our breath, our vision, and in our mind enables us to live in outside of the cage’s limitations. "Finding space to breathe" is part and parcel of the Schoolgenie life and training. Finding the space to be free from within a constrained position has profound effects.
For example:
An impending doctor’s diagnosis makes us feel fearful. Focussing on the forthcoming appointment gives us a knot in our stomach, consuming us. We can feel the cage. But if, for a moment, we take our eyes off the very real bars of the cage of anxiety we see a little bit of space. Room to breathe deeply, enjoy a sunset, chat with a friend, soak in a bath. Choosing to see the space between the bars can enhance the quality of our life on a minute-by-minute basis.
Steps to identify and escape your cage:
Slow down and identify what is worrying you most
Can you see past the bars? Where is there space?
What one thing could you do in the next 24 hours to give you breathing space and bring ease?
Commit now to do that thing
Enjoy it and breathe freely as you claim back some space in your life.
